In a letter dated 29 June 1903, he accepted the order in the following terms: "I accept with pleasure to do the portrait of our celebrated compatriot, Ziem, the greatest colourist among the Masters of the French landscape school." This might seem rather grandiloquent, but just gives an idea of Ziem's reputation during his lifetime. Never in his portraits did Darviot apply himself so rigourously to working the character or his palette.
