Grandmother
Edouard Jérôme Paupion (Dijon, 1854 – Orchamps, in the Jura Mountains, 1912)

Oil on canvas

H 165 X W 129 cm

Acquired by the Museum Commission in 1900

Paupion was the student of Gérôme. He made his debut in 1877 with portraits at the Paris Salon.

His work belongs to a social school that appeared in the 19th century, based upon representations of peasant life.

The Grandmother represented the high point of his art: the artist demonstrates an astonishing gift for observation tied to a true tenderness for his models.
