Portrait of Felix Ziem at the age of 82
  Edouard Darviot (Beaune, 1859 – id., 1921)
Oil on canvas
H 74 X L 60 cm
Commissioned by the city in 1903
Restored in 1999
Beaune, Museum of Fine Arts

In a letter dated 29 June 1903, he accepted the order in the following terms: "I accept with pleasure to do the portrait of our celebrated compatriot, Ziem, the greatest colourist among the Masters of the French landscape school." This might seem rather grandiloquent, but just gives an idea of Ziem's reputation during his lifetime. Never in his portraits did Darviot apply himself so rigourously to working the character or his palette.
