The museum was inaugurated in 1982 in the Cloister of the Bernadine Monastery, and offers a visit spread over three levels:
- On the ground floor is the rural and Burgundy ethnology collection from the end of the 19th century.
- On the 1st floor, daily life in Dijon from the end of the 18th century until World War II (reconstruction of ten businesses)
- On the 2nd floor a gallery about features of Burgundy is rounded off with a reading room and an audiovisual room.
