Solutré, Musée départemental de Préhistoire

The Solutré Museum presents the collections from one of the richest prehistoric sites in Europe. This was a hunting site used for for over 25,000 years by men of the Upper Paleolithic Age (from 35,000 to 10,000 B.C.), who came to hunt, dismember and smoke thousands of horses and reindeer. The Solutré archeological and botanical park, laid out on the archeological site, completes the visit to the museum. It lets you discover a wide variety of vegetable species that are characteristic of this area as well as the key results of the archeological digs.

  Archeology
The items on display at Solutré provide a full panorama of the various research works carried out at the site since its discovery. We can thus see the items brought up to date by the pre-historians of the end of the 19th century, A. Arcelin, H. de Ferry and Abbot Ducrost, and those uncovered in the latest digs, undertaken by Jean Combier between 1967 and 1978. These items could be put on display at the Solutré museum thanks to two gifts, from the Museum of the Ursulines in Mâcon for the collections of Arcelin and Ferry, and from the government for the collections from the excavations between 1967 and 1977.
