Clamecy, Musée d'Art et d'Histoire Romain Rolland |

The Clamecy Museum has been entirely renovated since 2005 and has very varied collections, shown off within a well-suited setting. It occupies the former mansion of the Duke de Bellegarde, the house where Romain Roland was born, which belonged to his grandfather, and a modern extension where the visitor enters. Here can be seen contemporary pictures given to President François Mitterrand;Gallic-Roman and Merovingian archeology; paintings and sculpture from the 16th to 21st centuries; an exceptional collection of Charles Loupot posters; old faience; souvenirs of Romain Rolland, and an evocation of floating wood down rivers.

Located at the entrance to the Clamecy town centre, the Romain Rolland Museum of Art and History surprises with its wall of water, symbol of the old business of floating wood downstream. As you go through the entirely renovated rooms, you will traverse the centuries and discover varied collections that will satisfy everyone's tastes: • dally in the Gallic-Roman archeology room, in front of the remains of a workshop of a bone cutter and bronze worker, and in the Merovingian room admire the weapons and jewels found in the tombs; appreciate the Fine Arts collections from the 16th to 20th centuries; • go past the adverts from the 1920s to the 1960s with posters by Charles Loupot, who worked for Air Liquide, St. Raphael, Valentine and others; discover the work of the potters of Clamecy and Nevers; •meet in the room about Romain Rolland, where can be found his furniture and mementos, and where you can hear the writer's voice; • rediscover the rich era of the wood floaters, recreated in a very special room. The museum has various other surprises for you, audiovisuals and listening posts, works donated by François Mitterrand and more.
